RIdIM Conference Berlin 3-5 Sept 2026: Practical Information

Berlin is a vibrant European capital known for its creativity, diversity, and dynamic cultural scene. Shaped by periods of cultural innovation as well as profound historical ruptures, the city engages critically with its past while looking toward the future. In many films and television series, Berlin plays a central role, from the pioneering 1927 documentary Berlin – Die Sinfonie der Großstadt, to Wim Wenders’s Der Himmel über Berlin (1987), and the internationally successful series Babylon Berlin (2017–present). The city is not only a cinematic backdrop but also a key site of film production. With its strong connections to film, media, and the arts, Berlin is an ideal location for Association RIdIM’s conference Music and the Moving Image / The Moving Image in Music.

Conference Venue: Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK Berlin)

The Universität der Künste Berlin (Berlin University of the Arts) is one of the largest and most prestigious art universities in Europe. It brings together fine arts, design, music, and the performing arts within a single institution. With its international orientation and interdisciplinary focus, UdK Berlin offers an inspiring academic and artistic environment closely connected to contemporary media, film, and artistic research.

Conference Registration and Registration Fees

The conference registration will open following the conclusion of the Program Committee process, and no later than 31 May 2026. Getting to Berlin

By Plane: Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) serves as the city’s international hub. From the airport, the Airport Express (FEX) and regional trains (RE7, RB14) provide direct connections to Berlin Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) in approximately 30 minutes. The S-Bahn line S9 also offers service to the city center. Travel by taxi to the city center takes approximately 35–45 minutes, depending on traffic. By Train: Berlin is well connected to the German Rail (Deutsche Bahn, DB) network. High-speed ICE trains link Berlin with destinations in all directions. By Bus: Numerous long-distance bus services (e.g., FlixBus) serve the Central Bus Station (ZOB) near the Funkturm radio tower.

Accommodation

Accommodation must be arranged independently. Berlin offers a wide range of hotels and other lodging options across all price categories, from budget accommodations to high-end hotels. Due to high demand throughout the year – especially during major events and trade fairs – early booking is strongly recommended.

Visa Requirements

Visas must be arranged independently, if required. Germany is part of the Schengen Area; conference participants from Schengen countries do not require a visa for entry. Citizens of many non-Schengen countries may enter Germany for short stays without a visa, while others are required to obtain a Schengen visa in advance. Conference participants are therefore strongly advised to check the applicable entry and visa requirements well in advance of travel; we recommend doing so after submitting your abstract. If necessary, RIdIM and/or UdK Berlin may issue an invitation letter; however, these institutions cannot intervene on your behalf.
