RIdIM Conference 2024: Practical Information

Laughing your staves off: irony, satire, and parody in visual representations and narratives of music

23rd International Conference

Association Répertoire International d’Iconographie Musicale (RIdIM) in collaboration with the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien (mdw)

Vienna, 29-31 Aug 2024

Vienna, the capital of Austria, is located in the east of the country on the Danube River. Its artistic and intellectual heritage has had a significant impact on the shaping of Europe, formed as it has been by an almost endless number of musicians, singers, conductors, artists, writers, philosophers, scientists, movie directors, theater and movie actors and actresses, etc. In addition, as the center of the Habsburg monarchy for more than seven centuries, the rulers of the House of Habsburg – one of the most prominent and important dynasties in European history – have left significant traces in the city’s landscape and architecture and the people’s mentality.

Getting to Vienna

Vienna can be easily reached by train or bus into Wien Hauptbahnhof (Vienna Central Station) from all major European cities. The journey from outside of Europe is also easy as many airlines serve Vienna International Airport with non-stop flights.

The center of Vienna can be reached quickly from Vienna International Airport Airport since the airport is well connected to the public transportation network: the City Airport Train (CAT) runs non-stop to Wien Mitte in only 16 minutes from where easy access to Vienna’s subway network is possible. Another (and cheaper) option is the Rapid Transit Railway line S7 which departs every 30 minutes with stops at “Wien Mitte” and “Wien Praterstern” – two stations that provide transfer to Vienna’s subway network.

Visa Requirements

Austria is a member of the Schengen Agreement. When traveling within the Schengen area, holders of a Schengen Visa or citizens of countries that join the Schengen agreement are free to cross all Schengen borders without undergoing any type of identity checks. However, you should always carry a passport or ID card as proof of your identity.

Third-country nationals are generally subject to a visa requirement when entering Austria and throughout their stay unless they have a valid Schengen visa from another Schengen state. Please check the visa information provided by the Austrian Government and apply for your visa as early as possible to avoid unnecessary complications.
